Thanks for the note. The comment above is a one person anecdote... There are plenty of folks who know what New Haven pizza is - it may index more towards the Northeast and parts of Florida but still millions of folks.
There was a place near me in Raleigh growing up that billed itself as Boston-style pizza. I loved it (plus they had the giant blocks of mozzarella cheese breaded and covered in sauce, yum), and I just assumed it was a style of pizza everyone recognized. I went on for years talking about Boston-style every time someone mentioned they loved Chicago and NY-style. It was college before someone from Boston had to explain there was no Boston-style, it was simply the restaurant saying the owners were from Boston. Lol. Sorry, just rambling, but something I just thought of now for the first time in maybe a decade.
Just one metric: Google gives me about 406M hits for New Haven, CT and about 73M for Hartford (when spelling out "Hartford, Connecticut" for example). Don't forget about the famous New Haven pizza besides Yale too.
But generally speaking - I think Connecticut is more famous than any city within the state, although far from the most famous state. It generally represents calm, boringness, and affluence to the layperson despite the more textured nature of it in reality.
Never heard of New Haven pizza either. I think the google hits are because of Yale. Again outside of New England I think New Havens recognition drops off a lot.

If you're a big fan of Pizza, you probably won't hear much about it. It doesn't jump out at you like NY style or Chicago Deep Dish.
For a minute I was thinking of Anchorage more famous than the State. But then realized that is far from true. Most visitors do not come to Alaska for Anchorage. It may be a stepping off point, but that's about it.
What counties are more famous than any cities or towns within them?
Orange County, CA is an obvious one, and I feel like Westchester County, NY is one too.
Not well known nationally, but in Washington, the San Juan Islands/San Juan County is a place people visit and have vacation homes, and the whole area is better known than the towns Friday Harbor, Roche Harbor, etc. specifically.
lot of people don't know what state Baltimore is in.
Grand Rapids has quietly slipped into the Biggest Metros, nobody knows where that is.
Columbus and Columbia are the capitals of which states? Is Missouri one of them?
