Grand Rapids isn’t the flagship city in its state. Not sure how this would be of consequence.

Idaho is more famous than any city within...

Salt Lake City and Utah are probably equally well known? With maybe a slight edge to Salt Lake...

I also want to plug in again just how beautiful Salt Lake is!

You could possibly make that argument here in the US, but not internationally. Detroit is known around the world, Michigan is not.

You can’t have one without the other. California is equally famous (or more) than any city in it. Including Los Angeles.

I supposed that's possible. I guess you'd have to ask our international friends. In my travels both in Asia and Europe the people knew Michigan and how to find it on a map. Michigan is defined by a very unique geological feature in the great lakes, and is the only interior state or province that can be easily identified from space. I wouldn't specifically call it obscure either. In my experiences the folks abroad tend to be far more geographically aware than folks in the states are.

It’ll be anecdotal from both of us, but when I’ve traveled abroad in my college days I got many blank stares or the “ok (but I have no idea) nod” when I said Michigan. I found it easier to just say Detroit (which everyone knew) or I’m from California.
