It has to be the Jersey Shore, and the LI beaches. Each town has its own little charm. Plenty of marinas too for excursions. Plus the most locals.

@TacoSoup - Not to rehash this but since we're on the topic of beaches just wanted to mention that water temps at NJ beaches this week were recorded at 74 and 75 degrees. Only mid-July. A month from now the water temps here should be 75+. I think it's safe to say NJ, and LI beaches to a lesser degree, have warmer water temps on average than any Cali beaches in the summer months.

The outer Cape is of course sandy being a sand bar itself, but a hike from Boston.

Within an hour of Boston on the North Shore, here's some good options (all sand)

Cape Cod, Nantucket, Marthas Vineyard and Various South and North Shore beaches trump others by quality since a lot of them are glacial in formation.

Jersey beats for beach towns and boardwalks. But for beaches themselves they are OK

I have been to waters in both places. No way. Especially SoCal Beach waters. In fact even in winter the SoCal beach waters are still pretty warm. It is at a lower latitude afterall. On top of that, east coast is generally colder at same latitudes. Look at the Pacific Northwest. It does not get anywhere near as cold as the east coast equivalent latitudes even in winter.

You’re confusing air and ocean temps. East Coast water temps are MUCH warmer in the summer months than the west coast for similar latitudes. By August, water off of Cape Cod is similar in temps to Santa Monica, which is obviously much further south. Water off of San Francisco (and north) is nearly unswimmable regardless of season.

^ This. NJ Brazen is wrong. This is a well known fact.

I think it's kind of a stretch to consider the Jersey Shore part of the Philly metro even if the ever-expansive CSA definition includes some of those counties. If you have to drive across open country to get there..you're no longer in the "metro" IMO.
We are going by metro.

Cape May
Wildwoods
Ocean City
Brigatine
Sunset Beach
Sea Isle City
Avalon
Stone Harbor
Beach Haven
