Then what is with all that Gulf Stream affecting Europe and keeping it mild inspite of being at same latitude as Edmonton. Must be nonsense then.

Not sure what you're getting at here, or how this has to do with
water temperature. But regardless:
1. Air Temps are
most definitely impacted by water temps. It's one of the reasons why the West Coast is warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer than the East Coast - put simply, winds blowing west to east will keep west coasts across the world more temperate than east coasts.
2. The water on the West Coast is of course warmer than the East Cost in the middle of Winter, when nobody on either coast is at the beach
3. The gulf stream does not impact the west coast, it is a North Atlantic current only
4. Today's ocean temperatures: Chatham, MA = 68 degrees; Santa Monica, CA = 65 degree; The water temps in Chatham will keep increasing through September, while the water temperature in Santa Monica will not. Heck, water temps off of the southern Jersey Shore will be a full 10 degrees warmer than Southern California
Anyway, too much digression here on my part, but I'll wrap up by saying that in the months that people actually go to the beach, water temperatures on the East Coast are MUCH warmer than the West Coast. Your original point was that the West Coast water was warmer, which it is not.
Cheers.
