It hit the 90's with humidity up here in Vermont last week and I had some time off, so my DH and I made a road trip to Bar Harbor and Acadia NP. The ocean air did wonders with mornings in the 60's, temps didn't exceed the low 80's during the day and the air felt air naturally conditioned on the shore. Basically you'll do well anywhere near a cold ocean. I did look into flying to Halifax, Nova Scotia, but there were seriously no rental cars to be found anywhere. I checked pretty much any & every resource. So road tripping to Maine was the next best option.

In August 2006, I dodged a heatwave where Ohio was over 100 degrees by going to Mackinac Island and Sault Ste. Marie in northern Michigan.

Somewhere in Maine. In southern Maine the water on beautiful York Beach should finally be warm enough and the beach is always beautiful for walking. You can visit the outlets (shopping) in Kittery and you can head north along the coast. Lots of little towns and if it's crowded, just keep going northward. One thing to watch out for in late August is hurricanes though. In that case, head inland, although the hurricanes usually pretty much die out by the time they get to Maine. Maine features great food, a glance at a simpler life, forests, ocean, and sometimes even solitude. Not much political craziness either and that's always a good thing.

Just got back from a camping trip in the San Juan islands in Washington. The weather was perfect; highs never exceeded 72 and lows in the lower 50s. Sunny most of the time with a few instances of a light drizzle. It was a nice reprieve from this unusually hot summer in Portland. Would strongly recommend for a cool summer getaway.
