I think Americans have a strong affinity for the Brits. There are many artist colonies in the US you may want to check unless you are in a position to afford LA and NY.
I know in St. Louis you can get a good 1 BR downtown for $700-$1000/month, which is £354.41 - £506.3
For Downtown St. Louis the cheapest I've seen is about $550/month £ 278.47 1BR to the most being $1950 £987.29 for 3 BR, and $2950 £ 1493.6 for 2BR. Lofts costing over $1750 £886.03 seem to be more rare, though. Searching Craigslist I only found 36 listings for lofts over $1750. Other parts of the city will vary in price, though.
Looking at Craigslist, it seems the average Downtown New York City prices are somewhere between $2500-$5000 (£ 1265.76 - £ 2531.52) The cheapest appears to be $1500 £ 759.46 (1 BR) (Brooklyn Heights) and the most expensive appears to be $7000 (2 BR) (Gramercy) £ 3544.12
As far as weather, City-Data says that St. Louis gets 90 degree weather mostly only in August and July (that's the high temp). But the average temp for those 2 months is 80 degrees F. It can get hot. December and January average is 30 and high is 40. So it certainly is seasonal.
And according to city-data the morning humidity can be around 80% with afternoon humidity around 60% - 70%.
Also according to city-data, this is New York's stats:
The high in July-Sept is about 80-85 degrees F
average is 70-75
Daily low Sept to Feb is 25 F to 35 F. Average is 30-40 and high is 40-50
Just according to that, there doesn't appear to be a major difference. New York will get more snow, though. That's for certain.
Average snowfall around the U.S. Snowfall - Average Total In Inches
New York has 3 locations (Central Park, LaGuardia Airport, and JFK Airport)
The snowfalls are listed as 28.4 inches, 22.7 inches, 26.0 inches
St. Louis is listed as 19.6 inches annually.
Just some statistical analysis.
