So more than half the people living 25mi from Watertown, MA weren’t born in Massachusetts? That seems pretty extreme.
It means that, within that circle, thats how many were not born in MA. They could have been born in NH, RI, CT, or any other state. Given than Boston has such a huge amount of transplants, it doesn't seem that crazy to me.
Miami/SF, Milwaukee, Chicago, Cleveland have the most proportional water by 20 mile radius (in that order).
NYC, Seattle, Boston, Baltimore, NoLA would be the next tier
*Everything else*
3 of the top 5 being cities directly on the Great Lakes doesn't surprise me at all, but I'm guessing would be a surprise to most. ... dumb luck but i watched a 700-foot, 6 story cruise ship come to port the other week when I was downtown (Cleveland)

Even though Detroit falls into "Everything else" in terms of water, I would think it comes pretty close to having the most proportional part of it's radius obsolete given how much of it sits in Canada no?

Yes, but Winsdor doesn't add much population wise. It's something like an extra ~300k in that radius
The numbers the are shown don't include anything from Canada or Mexico.
Correct.
For Detroit, it doesn't include Essex County (where Windsor lies in). Essex has ~420k but a 20 miles radius covers roughly 2/3rd of the county
I forgot to add San Diego. SD gets a massive boost from TJ at that radius and is in the same tier as Miami, SF, Chicago, Cleveland & Milwaukee in terms of land:water ratio.

El Paso is the one I always think about when I think of US cities that get the biggest transnational boost.
The urban population triples.
