Poor Muttontown. They came in last. The Wiki pic of their Villqge Hall looks like a double-wide. The town was once bought by King Zog of Albania. Not kidding. Alicia Keys once lived there.
Wiki's list of Atherton's famous people is a fun read. Willie Mays, Jerry Rice, Y A Tittle, Shirley Temple.
If you go by that factor - median transaction price - then obviously you're also pre-selecting by housing form. Jurisdictions that also feature denser housing like condos and thus smaller units would naturally be sent down the list. Atherton is basically all large houses behind fences and big gates.
It'd probably be a more accurate representation if you went by "$ per sq ft".
Willie Mays lives in Atherton, where the median is 8-mil. He only made $1.6-mil in his career, or $11-mil adjusted for inflation. His pay per season peaked at $165,000.

Willie Mays paved the way for these modern day athletes making obscene amounts of money today. If anyone deserves to live in some uber wealthy area it's him.
I thought there would be a few more from Massachusetts and like 1 or two from Illinois.
Keep in mind #100 on the list still has a price of $1.75M.
There are many expensive municipalities in Massachusetts, Illinois and other places with numbers over $1M (which I consider a general threshold for being a very expensive place to buy).
For example, the median sale price for a home in Dover, MA is ~$1.7M, Winnetka, Ill ~$1.3M, Gladwyne, PA ~$1.3M, Franklin Lakes, NJ ~$1.5M, etc...
It is important to note that the ranking takes into account single-family homes, condos and co-ops. So, an affluent area that has a lot of condos and co-ops will have a lower median on average relative to a comparable area with a higher proportion of single family homes.
