Hello friends, young adult here! I am looking to move, and have no idea where I'd like to go. (whether within or out of IA). I have been debating Ankeny but I'd definitely be increasing my cost of living.
I do not have much experience moving on my own so I am looking for some guidance. Since I have graduated high school (5 years ago now!) I have only moved 20 min outside of the small town I graduated in, and have recently moved back.
Some helpful info and what I think I would like:
-affordable cost of living /housing(rentals)
-I have some family in MN and do love nature/lakes
-Job opportunities important! (administrative ideally- have medical office experience)
-Looking for no longer than 30min commutes for work ideally less. I hate traffic
-Welcoming /sense of community ?
-meet new people, enough income to experience new things after expenses
-Suburban? (I love nature but want to be close enough to experience fun things like restaurants and other activities)
-weather: spring and fall are my favorites/ do not mind cold winters
-I am not religious or very political
if there is any other information that would be helpful please let me know! I'd love some recommendations and insight. It's pretty daunting having so many options as nothing is keeping me where I am.
Answers to these criteria can narrow your list pretty quickly:
Metro / city / town size range
Presence of a college that interest at some point
Rental budget
What do you think of Rochester MN or Eau Claire WI? Or Winona MN, Lacrosse WI, Northfield MN, Saint Cloud MN, Brookings SD, etc. Maybe give them a look.
How far are you willing to venture out from Iowa?
Have an adequate financial reserve for a few months and visit (Once, twice before deciding. Look as a prospective resident, not just a tourist.)
For job prospects, I would suggest a place no smaller than Waterloo or Cedar Rapids. They will also have job-list agencies.
What you seek is hard -- look for a job, no a town.
