I had a basic mental map of the freeways and a lot of the arterial streets in the Bay Area after ~2 months. I was commuting from SF to my office near San Jose, though, and also going to regular meetups in Oakland/Berkeley, so that definitely helped with forcing me to get familiar with the layout.
I had a few friends, besides my roommates, by ~4 months in. I've moved a lot, though, so I'm used to doing all this.
I moved to Nashville 1997-2014, felt at home in weeks. So many people I met there made it easy.
I moved to NJ 2014, did not experience the friendliness.
Moved back to Ct 2017 for likely a decade as family is older and not gonna be around long, and truthfully, my Ct circle outside of family is aloof, like in NJ.
So to anyone seeking a move, I would advise picking a location with tons of relos. Nashville metro tends to be 1 in three are relos of recent years at any time.
