I guess that really gets to a point about this thread: are we talking about which states have the most identity to outsiders, or which states garner the most unified identity amongst actual residents? Those are probably two different answers.

I think a couple small and fairly homogeneous New England states have an edge here, like Vermont and Rhode Island.
I dunno...I met people from Maine in college, they didn't mention Maine in conversation.

I'm not being condescending, I'm just genuinely curious about what makes Montana's identity so strong? I live in a different western state and have never even met someone from Montana. I know a couple of people who went there for job core in their teens.

New Mexico I think is a solid t3 with Kansas. NM mainly because of Roswell UFOs and the desert. Kansas because of being flat plain boring praerie farmland. Then Louisiana does have a strong image but when you take away NOLA that reputation takes a big hit. Alot of people haven't heard of Lafayette or aware of unique cultural aspects of the state that extends beyond NOLA metro area. It should be t3 still becaue of bayous. Could make an argument for putting Kansas t4 because there are other states that largely have the same reputation (Nebraska comes to mind).

Don't think New York is particularly standout besides NYC. It's not terrrible but it's pretty middle of the pack, about same as Pennsylvania but above someplace like Delaware

Montana I would give it credit for Yellowstone. Compared to Idaho, Wyoming and the Dakotas, I feel like Montana is the one that stands out in that region for image. I still wouldnt' put it in top 2 tiers but a t3 with those other states being t4s

I would put Minnesota in tier one. Minnesotans have lots of state pride and are very defensive about their state. The upper midwestern culture is associated mostly with Minnesota.

This is nonsense. You might as well be rolling a die for each state and placing them into a tier accordingly. Maybe that's what you did.

What would your list look like then? Most people are agreeing Florida, Alaska, Hawaii, California are all T1.

I'm trying to think what should go in the bottom tier. Arkansas and Delaware surely belong there. Illinois I think does belong there too. Washington State is pretty far down there too. Oregon I wouldn't put much higher. It has Nike and the Oregon Trail but meh, people just think Portlandia and culture wars politics stuff instantly for the whole state, which I would roll up into Portland rather than Oregon. New Hampshire should probably be in the bottom tier. Outside of a relatively fringe libertarian politics it's not really known at all. Especiallybeing right next to a powerhouse like Vermont. Indiana i would put pretty low too. Really doesn't stand out at all nationally/internationally.

I definitely would not put Minnesota in t1. Many people in outside of US/CA could not even tell you one thing about Minnesota. Probably some Americans coud not even find it on the map.

This isn't about which state is most popular. Just because you nothing about Minnesota doesn't mean other people don't.
