My "nightlife" is beers with the boys in the locker room after a men's league rec hockey game then out for a couple at a local's type of bar where you know everyone. My fiancee and I might go out to dinner and see a band or something. Other times we might listen to music by the lake and drink with whoever is available. I find this much prefereable to "nightlife" as seemingly described in this thread. I mean, sometimes I do engage in such things. It's not "Bad" per se, it's just not something I really care about doing more than once a month.

IMO European nightlife is dumb. It's super shallow and Europeans are not as friendly as Americans anyway. Also expensive. Historically, Europeans had much more of a home-focused entertainment world as well.

I am glad I went clubbin and all that in the early and mid 00s. At least it was before the smart phone era and music actually had people dancing. When it comes to hip hop and R&B, the music from 2013 onwards is boring for clubs. Trap music does not get people dancing like that. Not to mention, all the spots are all about VIP and bottle services.

If I can find the tweet, I'll post it but a DJ made a great point about how early 2000s hip hop and now Afro beats have far more energy for people simply because they made you dance or get you vibin. Today's trap music era doesn't do that.

Totally agree with this! I'm so glad I had my club/partying/going out phase during the "no smart phone era." It was just authentic and everyone was tuned into what was going on in the moment.

Going out is so just equal across the board everywhere now, in every city. You'll get the same experience in San Diego as Seattle, and Phoenix as Miami, and Atlanta as Boston, etc. People hovering around with their smart phones as "safety nets," using their smart phones for video/camera/social media, and basically just distracted.

The exceptions are the biggest cities, that can offer night club/bar/experience uniqueness, like NYC, LA or Chicago.

All in all, nightlife is really lame present day.

I noticed the worst is going to concerts. People just lift their smart phone in the air recording the concerts, or they go “live” on their social media to “broadcast” (is it even legal?) the concert to their followers. I find it very distracting, and not to mention, what happens to just enjoying the concert?!

It seems like everything becomes a chore, a performative act, that one needs to “share” with the world.

There’s a reason why nightlife is uneventful now, people probably devote more energy and time in dancing on TikTok to gain likes and followers.

To the bolded, I have no idea. I honestly dont think it really is? But almost everyone does it... why you going to record the concert with your phone?? I cant stand that.

Also- as a TikTok creator with tens of thousands of followers and millions of likes, I feel this. People our age, including myself, have this 'obligation' to share and record. I don't record everything, but when I don't record something cool... I feel absolutely guilty for not. Im 25 btw.

Phoenix's nightlife can produce the same experiences as Miami's? Boston's the same as Atlanta's? Surely you must be talking about the Miami in Ohio? If anything San Diego and Los Angeles, and Chicago and New York produce far closer nightlife experiences to each other than the type of super unique things that the Miami area has going on.

Yep, completely this!! Concerts are the WORST for that.

Also, like are people really going home and watching their video-ed concert after the fact?! Or do ppl watch those as if they were there? I guess if they really like the artist they will...ugh. LOL

Everything has to be recorded, it's funny to watch.

I'm guilty of doing it if I go to a good restaurant myself too. I'll do an instagram story here and there.

But if we go out to bars, I rarely have the phone out. Now if I went out solo, I might be on the phone more, but that rarely happens anyway.

That is so lame and a not so pleasant impact of the social media/internet/mobile device world that now plagues our society.

I now see this at sporting events too with mostly the younger gen. Sh*t, go watch Sportscenter and save a few hundred bucks if you want to see a video recap of a live sporting event that you are attending in person LOL Forget sharing, how about experiencing. Aye aye aye

I’m guilty as charge too.( and I’m older than 25!.) it’s almost become an autopilot these days to “share” important life events to friends and family. I’m in design/art/architecture so I share related photography/snapshots/information/traveling but I try to self-censor and set the boundary. Kids are off-limit because you won’t believe the stuff some parents post in public. I only use Instagram and it’s set private. Too many weirdos out there.

I do think a lot of us (including myself) these days are dopamine-deficient, as it reflects in checking the posts/likes/comments. Social media can be a positive attribute, in your case you’re an adult and apparently know what you’re doing (your frontal lobe is mature now.) but my newly 14 yrs old is already obsessed with her phone, she can wait to have her social media later.

jjbradleynyc, BigCity76, co-signed. 100% agree!

I remember in the 2000s even kicker/cowboy places would mix in a hip hop song from time to time and the cowboys and cowgirls would eat it up. It was quite common to hear Lil Jon, Peety Pablo or some other Southern rapper playing at InCahoots or the Far West Rodeo at least once an hour on Friday nights. You couldn't do that with today's style of hip hop.
