For LA, I think this is pretty good. The only thing is that I would include Ventura into the mix of LA. Also, I know we might not like it, but for all intents and purposes the IE is just an extension of LA.

It does get some things right. It includes the entire Bay Area as one thing rather than either having the metro area not include San Jose or having a ridiculously large CSA that includes Stockton.

Another interesting quirk is that in terms of population density (ppl/sqkm), the order for them goes

1. LA - 2,253
2. Vegas - 2,005
3. Honolulu - 1,962
4. Miami - 1,905
5. NYC - 1,886
6. SF - 1,883
7. SD - 1,761
8. Fresno - 1,635
9. Sacramento - 1,632
10. Bakersfield - 1,612

The sunbelt wins the long game generally speaking from a density perspective.

That actually makes sense they have a really strong urban development growth boundary. It’s not a place that sprawls anymore than it needs to currently. If they removed these boundaries some of the further afoot suburbia would eventually merge with Toronto but more importantly there would be rapid growth of SFH dominated neighborhoods and some urban neighborhoods on the periphery.

I hear you but not even 1 square mile. Sorry but something doesn't smell right with this. In a general sense Toronto is a more compressed and smaller urban area land wise than most U.S cities in the comparable population range, but I can't believe there isn't some growth along the edges even with the greenbelt.
