My apologies for being so snippy to a newcomer. I also see Asheville is smaller than your criteria. Maybe with a bigger city you get more actual diversity.
What's up with not wanting to be around religious people? That's going to be pretty hard in the USA.
Yup, Asheville has attracted so many crunchy newcomers they have created animosity with the original residents.
Once again we have the conundrum of someone who states they are looking for diversity but yet it appears they want to be surrounded by people just like themselves.
I wouldn't call that snippy as much as I would call it 'honest'. It also seems that the OP is asking for some kind of non-existent utopia. Some flexibility (geography, affordability, weather, population) is essential--no city is going to match your every criteria exactly. (Although it seems Asheville is closest.)
I would try Austin. Although most people are religious and it is in Midwest.(Idu your problems with these things though). Its warm, liberal, and a wonderful city.(Although it doesn't have a sports team.) It's not too big and not too small.
