California, my home state, after about 5 years of solid growth ranking among the best performing states, expanded a dismal 1.5% in 2007, and limped passed the 1.8 trillion dollar mark. Maybe we can still salvage the rest of 2008.

I heard that if CA were classified as a country and not a state, it would have the 8th largest economy in the world.

Looks like CA still has the grossest domestic product of any state.

Nice to see that Ohio and PA are high on the list. I may wind up moving to one of these states in the near future.

What I would be interested in are trend lines.

For example, if you look at the snapshot of a yearly figure, you'd come away with one set of assumptions. However, if you look at overall trends over the past 20-30 years, you come away with a completely different impression.

What would be interesting is if we could compile a list with these current states along with the biggest oil companies. I believe every quarter they record amazing profits such as $33 billion for the 1st quarter of 2008 for example. I would bet some Oil companies would fall in the top 10 (for example ExxonMobil).

STATE ECONOMIC GROWTH SLOWED IN 2007
New estimates released today by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis show that economic growth slowed in most states and regions of the U.S. in 2007. Real GDP growth slowed in 36 states, with declines in construction and finance and insurance restraining growth in many states.1 Nationally, real economic growth slowed from 3.1 percent in 2006 to 2.0 percent in 2007, one percentage point below the average growth of 3.0 percent for 2002-2006.
