I saw this somewhere else with different cities and I thought it was very informative...
Which city is the best to visit...
Type on the following subjects about one of the cities in the title (Seattle, Reno, Portland, Los Angeles, or Ogden)
Are the Snakes, Spiders, Killer Bees, Mice, Rats, locusts, frogs (other Poisonous animals or pests) bad and which ones?
Crime (Is it mostly violent crime?)
Fun/Things to do
How is Public transportation?
How clean is the city?
Urban decay/vast amounts of ghettoes
How friendly are the people there?
What are the people like there?
Which city is most liberal and in what way? (Social, Political, or Fiscal)
Night Life/Social Scene
Cost of Living/Price of gas
Interesting list. Can't speak for the other cities but Los Angeles.
Spiders/bugs/dangerous animals: There are Black Widow spiders & occasionally a deadly Recluse spider is reported. African bees, West Nile mosquitoes & fire ants made their appearance several years ago but don't seem to be much of a problem. Rattle snakes are in the hills but rarely bite people unless provoked ; same with coyotes & mountain lions. Plenty of tree rats due to so many citrus/avocado trees but probably not any worse than most areas.
Crime is an issue but mainly in low income areas.
Way too many things to do for fun to list.
Los Angeles isn't any cleaner than most cities but the air quality is not good compared to practically all other urban areas due to mountain ranges that surround the LA Basin.
There are ghettos/barrios & there are wealthy neighborhoods & everything in between.
LA isn't any friendlier than most other cities.
Nightlife/club scene is good w/ lots to do at night or during the day.
Los Angeles is considered a liberal city since Democrats seem to have total control & city laws are stricter than most other cities in the U.S.
Los Angeles is relatively expensive to live in & gas prices are higher in California than most other states due to stricter environmental regulations [additives to gasoline/smog checks, etc]
I won't comment on alot of the things you said because I don't live there but I was in Reno on and off for 3 weeks in December last year while staying in South Lake Tahoe, from what I seen Reno is a great place to visit and what makes it even more appealing is that Lake Tahoe is only an hours drive away. The people for me were friendly, I never met a person who was rude in any way (maybe because I was a tourist, I'm not too sure).
The Casinos make it great if you like that sort of thing, when I got off the plane from San Fran that was one of the first things I noticed at the airport, was quite a good feeling, too bad I wasn't old enough to play them.
Spiders and bugs I beleive there are Black Widows and Scorpins.
I love Reno because of it's great mountain location (Lake Tahoe is absolutely stunning...one of the most beautiful spots in the US). The city is growing at a healthy rate (not too fast, not too slow), it has plenty of excitement generated by the university (Wolfpack football, for example), and the casinos mean no state income tax. I'd say that it's a socially moderate city.
Aside from that, I think Seattle would be high on the list (clean, liberal, fun).

And don't forget last years Wolfpack basketball when they were ranked in the AP Poll top 10!!
And Nevada should have a great basketball team this year with Babbitt. I think Reno is a good place to live, but I would probably choose Portland or Seattle over it.
