Try mid size Northern cities like Sioux Falls, Lincoln, Fargo, Rapid City, Cheyenne, Billings, etc... I'd bet even Wichita, Tulsa and Santa Fe would be possibilites.

The Great Plains region might be more reasonable than the Northeast and Great Lakes region. That's true. Montana ranked pretty well on the list.

But after seeing the tax rankings, Tennessee is really looking like a gem. Low costs of living AND low taxes? Lucky ducks.

radraja, that's what I thought when I seen Tennessee's ranking. I already have a passion for TN and I see that. Makes me itch to move there even more. Especially coming from Wisconsin.

What parts of the north and south are you talking about?
My experiences with the south, mostly in Arkansas, is that it's heavily taxed. Bill Clinton felt the poor people's pain, and then taxed them to death... with little or no results in social services. Worst schools and worst roads when he was gov. Gotta love it.
Many parts of the upper midwest are dirt cheap. Some may say they just have cities that no one cares about anymore. I call it weeding out the whinos. Southern New England and the Mid-Atlantic are expensive, but they aren't the only places in the North. Pricey Florida is in the south, as are many high-dollar big cities.
The north-south thing makes no sense to me.

WOW, When my mom worked for the University of WI-Madison she used to spend around $100 a month on parking in a freakn ramp! It's a joke.
