A place with commercial sea going vessels, and pleasure boats. A placewhere the public has access to the waterfront for pleasure walking and ship gazing.I am thinking Portland, Maine or Tacoma, WA. Any other ideas, please? I am planning to move to such a place so any other info related to jobs, cost living, etc are appreciated.

Obviously, you will want to check out any city that has a large commercial port. A large commercial port invariably brings pleasure boaters and waterfront activities. What comes to mind (beyond Tacoma and Portland ME): San Diego, CA, Long Beach, CA, San Francisco, CA, Seattle, WA, Miami, FL, Savannah, GA, Norfolk, VA, Baltimore, MD, Philadelphia, PA, New York, NY, and Boston, MA.

Corpus Christi and Galveston, Texas are great. West Coast Florida (Tampa, St. Pete, Sanibel Island (my personal favorite). Anything Gulf of Mexico can do no wrong. It may not qualify as the scenic little fishing village, however. (For pure maritime, check out Fishtown, Michigan). It *is* the quintessential maritime community.

It is not in the US but Halifax, Nova Scotia would be a PERFECT fit for your description.
