The Oregon coast is probably one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world, that and much of the Calif coast. However it is not a place to go, to lie on a beach or get a tan, or even take a walk on much of the year. Even in summer except for a few short periods does it get above 60 for a high. It is cloudy and foggy and in many areas very windy. So if you visit it, enjoy the scenery when you can, but don't expect sunny warm weather. One would be lucky to get 3 or 4 days a month when it gets to 70 and sunny even in July and August. Thats how it is. I can understand the OP leaving Oregon off of the list.

Heh what about Texas? I lived in Galveston for a year right on the beach and it was actually nice. Not too crowded and the gulf was tame enough to actually swim in it. Miles of sandy beach to walk on. Of course that was 30 years ago so I hate to to think about what it is like today. Hopefully it hasn't changed that much. Ca beaches, the water is too cold for me..

Hawaii by far. Warm water, cliffs, waves. Next would be California b/c of the cliffs, waves. Then Florida for the warm water. Oregon has a great "coast", but not a fun beach to swim in (brrr!!!)

You left out Oregon! Gorgeous, clean, accessible, FREE beaches - the entire coast - with spectacular geography nearby. And rest facilities. Never crowded. Pets and camping allowed. A bit chilly, but IMO that beats blistering heat of Atlantic beaches (and you can always tell the natives--they're the ones NOT wearing parkas!)

The Jersey Shore is - um - an experience. Sort of like a semi-naked mosh pit where you have to pay to step over rude people on your way to the brown bathwater.

I really do love New Jersey. Just not during the season!

The beaches are colder, certainly, than Atlantic beaches. First-timers are really conspicuous. I've been here six summers and I'm just getting used to it. People don't go to the beach in OR and WA for the heat, the tan or the splashing. We camp, kite, cook out, play with dogs, walk (and walk and walk), surf, kiteboard, play catch, shoot photos, hike in the parks, climb lighthouses - then go home to the tanning bed!
