Most major cities on a river or bay have a smaller city on the other side of the water.
Which "other side" cities are the best? Which are the worst?
Best:
I'll be a homer and throw Northern KY into the mix. Covington and Newport both have a lots of high rise office buildings and condos, beautiful historic neighborhoods, and lots of night clubs and restaurants. It is also home to the Greater Cincinnati International Airport and Newport Aquarium. It's percent growth is more than double the overall percent growth for the Cinci metro area
Newport's Waterfront (including Newport Aquarium and Newport on The Levee entertainment district)

Worst: West Memphis, Arkansas --> there's absolutly nothing there
Allegheny City, on the Allegheny River opposite Pittsburgh. It's where the Steelers and Pirates play, and there's been a lot of new development there recently. Unfortunately, it was annexed in 1907 and no longer exists.
Across the river from Filthydelphia lays Camden, New Jersey. That place is anything but a garden spot and easily rivals East St. Louis as the worst slum sitting across the river of a sizable city.
And I'm in agreement with Censusdata. The NKY suburbs of Cincinnati is my favorite "across river community" of any I've visited.

Anyone that's actually been there have any thoughts about
-the Kansas side of the KC metro
- Southern Washington across from Portland
- areas across from Omaha (Council Bluffs?)
For worst compared to the "top" city, I'd have to go with Oakland which is across the bay from SF. San Francisco is world class, and Oakland is mostly a slum. If Cambridge is considered a "city", I'd put it among the best.

Kansas side of the KC metro is pretty nice, but also has its less desired areas, about like any city. It seems like Johnson County, Kansas is a pretty desired spot in the metro. This is where Overland Park is located.
Council Bluffs has really improved itself. Lots of development going on and they landed a Google data center, use to really have a bad rap other than the casinos, but has really improved itself.
Can't help ya with Portland.
Good idea for a thread, lots of areas that fit the critera.
The city across Omaha, Council Bluffs, isnt bad, but it could be much better, its the only significant city across the river and has a population of 60,000, there has been very little suburban development over there. the West side of town isn't very nice and is lower income but development from Omaha is starting to spill over there, like I said it could be much better. Here is what the county its in looks like, Council Bluffs is in red.
