Rowhouses are not common in California except in cities like San Francisco where there is less land and steep hills. But condos are like rowhouses and you see more and more home construction where there are little if any yards.

St. Louis has a lot of them especially near the river on the southside (Soulard is full of them). I really don't have good pics of great St. Louis rowhouses, but I do have a few half-decent ones.

In the Chicago suburbs they are called Townhomes and they are everywhere. They cut down on the amount of land (the single largest expense of a home) needed to build a unit. In some jurisdictions fire sprinklers are required in such housing.

The lack of yard can be considered a good thing: less maintenance! I can mow mine with a non-motorized push mower in about 10 minutes.

Theres a few in my town of Staunton, VA and quite a few in Richmond, the Ghent neighborhood of Norfolk, and Alexandria. Really, any historic town or city in VA of decent size has them. I'd post pictures, but don't have any of them. I'll have to fix that someday.

How many square feet typically are your average 3-floor rowhomes? I was thinking if I move one day and have kids, I'd like to have one all for myself and it is always good to have a lot of space if you're gonna have a family and live near the city.
