Philly:
  • the Movie "Philadelphia"
  • Will Smith mentioning it several times.....
  • All 6 million of the Rocky movies
  • Sports: (NFL) Eagles, (NBA) Sixers, (MLB) Philies, (NHL) Flyers, (MLS) 2010 expansion team, (Arena Football) Jon Bon Jovi's Philadelphia Soul......

Baltimore:
  • "The Wire" and "One on One"
  • Edgar Allen Poe
  • The Preakness
  • Sports: (NFL) Ravens, (MLB) Orioles, (Horse Racing) the Preakness

Compared to the cities Billiam mentioned... no, Phily and B-more are very much well known.
BTW, San Jose, Fort Worth, and Jacksonville... they're bigger than Baltimore, yet few people ever mention it......

San Jose and Ft. Worth are overshadowed by their more popular and well known neighbors. Jacksonville is large, but it's also geographically the largest city in the lower 48. Sure it's got 700,000 people, but that's spread over the size of a VERY large amount of land. Not to mention the place is the armpit of the South East

You hit 'em all right on the head.

San Jose.... because of San Francisco.

Pittsburg.... probably because of loss in population, but at least they have the steel industry and their sports teams. Especially the Steelers.

Jacksonville.... because of Miami.

Fort Worth.... because of Dallas.

Memphis.... mostly just known for Elvis, Blues, and it's college basketball team. That's it.

Tucson... because of Phoenix.

Fresno... becuase..... well, it's not all that big to begin with.

And Corpus Christi.... see Fresno

unfortunately, nowadays philly & b'more are more known for being crime zones than anything else...

but, yeah, bay area or not, san jose should definitely be better known, isn't it approaching a million?
