RE: the name Don, based on my observations,
it's "Dahhhn" in Western NY where I am from originally;
in NJ and NYC, it's "Duwin"
in the upper Midwest (where I live now) and most of the rest of the US and Canada, it's "Dawn"
For some reason, the name Sean is pronounced "Shawn" in upstate NY (as it is in most of the rest of the country except NYC area, where it is Shuwin"), but here in MN, it is "Shahhhn".
I grew up near Lansing, Michigan and pronounce "cot" and "caught" differently. Also "Don" and "Dawn" sound different.
I grew up in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre...as far as I remember we pronounced both words the same. However we use...ain't all the time and heyna....constantly...."heyna" seems to mean don't you think so too???
I pronounce them differently... cot - like "kaht", short and sweet, one syllable - rhymes with "pot". And caught like "kaw-ut", with a "w" sound and a short "ut" making almost a 2nd syllable - rhymes with "brought". I'm from the Pacific NW.
I would say that there is a SLIGHT differents between the two. I am org. from VA.
I say cot like you say bot in the word "robot.
I say caught like taught
