What are some laws that are still enforced (not the one's that no one has heard that was written during 1800s) that are unique to your state and maybe legal (or illegal) in neighboring states.

Like for example,

- In Oregon and New Jersey, it's illegal to pump your own gas
- In Virginia radar detectors are illegal
- In Georgia you can't buy alcohol on Sunday
- In Nevada slots and casino gambling are legal throughout the state

In north carolina, its illegal to use an elephant to plow a cotton field.

Not my state but its illegal in West Virginia to sing underwater, and somewhere up north, if your wife is driving into a town, the husband must get out of the car and fire a gun 3 times to warn other motorists. these are probably not enforced, but I find them funny.

You can't buy booze in Arkansas on Sunday either. Arkansas and Georgia aren't alone on that matter unfortunately.

Indiana is the same way (except for restaurants and bars). You can go to Applebee's or your local bar and drink liquor on Sunday afternoon, but God forbid you go to the grocery store and get a 12-pack. There is growing movement in Indiana to get this changed, hopefully this becomes reality.

I'll add one from the great state of Arkansas.

Two minors can get married regardless of age as long as the girl isn't pregnant:

"In order for a person who is younger than eighteen (18) years of age and who is not pregnant to obtain a marriage license, the person must provide the county clerk with evidence of parental consent to the marriage."

I'm not sure if they ever fixed that in legislation.

In Massachusetts, you have to have a police officer (or multiple police officers) stand and watch traffic go by whenever road work or any kind of utility is being worked on. It's called working a "detail". This even applies on back alleys and small residential roads. The cops typically get 4 hour overtime minimums.

MA is the only state to require it, and it costs the taxpayers millions each year. They are just starting to discuss limiting them, although this has been discussed before to little actual action.

oh god, Rhode Island has a ton of these...

- Riding a horse over any public highway for the purpose of racing, or testing the speed of the horse is illegal. Penalty: Maximum $20 fine and imprisonment for 10 days.

- Any marriage where either of the parties is an idiot or lunatic is null and void

- Newport RI -
You cannot smoke a pipe after sunset.
- Providence -
- It is illegal to wear transparent clothing.
- You may not sell toothpaste and a toothbrush to the same customer on a Sunday.

Illinois Crazy Law

You may be arrested for vagrancy if you do not have at least one dollar bill on your person.

You must contact the police before entering the city in an automobile.

You may be convicted of a Class 4 felony offense, punishable by up to three years in state prison, for the crime of "eavesdropping" on your own conversation. -720 ILCS 5/14-2.

Chicago

It is illegal to give a dog whiskey.

In the Pullman area, it is illegal to drink beer out of a bucket while sitting on the curb.

Law forbids eating in a place that is on fire.

Kites may not be flown within the city limits.

It is forbidden to fish while sitting on a giraffe's neck.

Spitting is forbidden

Im not sure how true this one is, but I once read that in Joliet, IL it is illegal to pronounce the city's name as "jolly-et", its "joel-ee-et". I believe I read there was a $5 fine for mispronunciation.

Here are a few from WI:

Butter substitutes are not allowed to be served in state prisons.

Whenever two trains meet at an intersection of said tracks, neither shall proceed until the other has.

As people used to smuggle it in from Illinois, all yellow butter substitute is banned.

Condoms were considered an obsene article and had to hidden behind the pharmacist’s counter.

At one time, margarine was illegal.State Law made it illegal to serve apple pie in public restaurants without cheese.

My personal favorite is that a first time drunk driving offense is nothing more than a traffic violation. Not even a misdemeanor.

From Maine:

Shotguns are required to be taken to church in the event of a Native American attack.

You may not step out of a plane in flight.

After January 14th you will be charged a fine for having your Christmas decorations still up. (Sure wish they still enforced this one!!)
