Schools matter — but so do commutes, affordability and other amenities

Pay close attention to the article's last paragraph or two, where the writer acknowledges that individual situations and preferences matter a lot. It's true that certain basics, like good schools and low crime, are givens, but there is great variation between places that have those attributes. I noticed that Johnson County, KS, was third on the list. I've never been there, so it's very possible that I may have the wrong impression, but I've heard that a lot of Johnson County is the epitome of sprawling suburbia. I often think of sprawling suburbia as being short on much of a sense of community. I'm sure there must be people who would prefer to raise their children in small towns or intimate city neighborhoods, where people really look out for their neighbors. Places where children grow up being exposed to the values found in such havens have their own kind of worth as homes to families.
