Just because some answer the call of duty, does not mean that everyone deserves the benefits of service.

Following the logic of that argument... we should give the GI Bill to everyone over the age of 18 because "they might be drafted".......

It angers me when some use the possibilty of a draft as an excuse for receiving the benefits of service, while assuming none of the risks and sacrfices that actual members of the armed forces make.

The point is that bearing the responsibilities of being presumed an adult at 18 years old should accrue the rights of being presumed an adult at 18 years old. Of course I don't think there's anything magic about 18 as a drinking age, but it makes more sense than 21.

I think 19 is reasonable too. The idea of a HS student buying alcohol doesn't sit well with me. It only takes one 18 year old to but it for all of his younger friends. The idea that "they're doing it anyway, so make it legal" seems illogical to me.

I think it can be good to space out adult rights also....ease a person into the privileges and responsibilities of adulthood instead of handing it to them all at once.

It is actually legal (in my state anyway) for a parent to give their minor child alcohol in a private residence. I think it should be okay for 18 year olds to drink under the supervision of adults age 21+ in a private home too. They just can't buy it at the store or at a bar yet.

Actually, it's as low as 16 in some Eurpoean countries, and the "urban legend" that they do not have problems with alcoholism has been thoroughly debunked. I believe I posted some links earlier in this thread.

I agree that 18 is too young, with many 18 yr olds still being in high school. In fact, most kids turn 18 some time during their senior year in HS.

Abolish the drinking age! Strip alcohol of its glamor for little kids by treating it like its no big deal. In fact kids should start being taught by their parents how to drink as young as 5. Hell Emma Watson (Hermoine in Harry Potter) had her first wine glass at 3 and she's doing pretty well...

If you're old enough to vote, work, have sex and go to war you should be old enough to drink.

A 21 year old is not mature enough to drink, so I know an 18 year old sure isn't mature enough! Sorry but their brain is still maturing at that age, meaning there's too many stupid mistakes made. Driving drunk should not be one of them.

if you're old enough to die for this country, you're old enough to drink...

I'd support as low as 16 honestly.... making it taboo is what makes it more attractive...

Lowering the drinking age would be good for the economy right now as it would open up a whole new market for bars, clubs, etc. thus resulting in more tax revenue and fewer people losing their jobs. (Marijuana should be legalized for the same reason). Remember that ending Prohibition helped ease the Great Depression.

Some peoples' brains NEVER mature. Different people become mature at different ages. Tying it down to an arbitrary age is unfair and inaccurate.

18 ties in with the age of adulthood for so many other things in the US - its the age of consent in the Western states, and nationwide it confers voting rights, eligibility for military service, legal responsibility, etc. It seems like as good an arbitrary age to be able to drink legally as any.
