In what cities, never would you feel the same sense that something could go wrong that you would if you were going out in lets say Detroit?

What you want is a city whose population is 30,000, county population is 50,000, and nearest city over 100,000 is 100 miles away.

Not necessarily. The FBI ranks the top 100 cities over 100,000 that have the lowest crime. California cities occupy 25 of the top 50 for safety.

The thing with California though is you could be living in a very safe city and but right next door to that city is a crime infested city.

Take Torrance, CA for example. Pretty safe city. Low crime rate. But only like 5-10 miles from that city lies some of the most dangerous parts of the US. Compton, South LA, Watts, Inglewood.

I'm sure that list is full of any number of sunbelt suburbs. I'd rather see it by metro or urban area.

Basically or center cities.

Also, how do they weigh the crime?

Also, I'm wondering how Yonkers is ranked so high, given how some aspects of crime there stick out way more than cities near it on the list? It is arguably one of the most urban communities ranked so high too.

So much time is spent dissecting safe places but typically when one looks at the odds the most likely crime that'll be committed against you in a lifetime is going to be a burglary or property crime....and not an assault, robbery, rape or murder which are at lottery-like odds in terms of likely occurrence. I would spend a bit more time checking out the non-violent elements when deciding where to live.

That also can be misleading as well, because if you are a retail center, a lot of the property crime could occur there versus being completely done in residential neigfborhoods. So, you even have to be careful in that regard.

There's also the factor of those from outside of that city committing crimes within that city. Especially if it is a center city of a metro.
