I agree with you here. No disrespect intended, I just don't think it's right to draw a 1-1 correlation between the struggle of different groups.

My mom is from a Native American background and it would be highly offensive to her if the gay community started drawing comparisons to the plight of her people/ancestors. In a similar way, I believe that my African American friends are expressing their disdain for the comparison. It's not negating the struggle of the gay community, it's just a request to acknowledge it is not the same.
But, it IS the same. Inequality. Period. Again, it doesn't matter what size, color, nationality, sexual orientation you are...I am also of Native American background. The struggle for equality should not be defined solely by color, nationality, nor sexual orientation. Screw whether other "groups" are expressing their disdain. What makes you think that your mother's or your African American friends' pains and struggles have been any different from what gay people have experienced (for much longer nonetheless)? I doubt they cared about whether or not they were drawing comparisons (at the time) to the plights of others. How many times did the African American community call their situation the "Holocaust of America"? Are you gay? Do you have any idea what it has been like to grow up in current AND past times being a gay individual and dealing (sometimes on a daily basis) with the ridicule? I am now 38 yrs old, but it took me quite a while to become comfortable with who I am, no thanks to what society dictated was "right or wrong" - and that includes the American Indian AND African American communities. Shame on them. They should know better.

Well, I'm sorry that you've had to deal with a tough situation. We'll have to agree to disagree on this matter.

I think your words are far too harsh here.

Here's a link to an FAQ on same-sex marriage from the NYC city clerk's office, which outlines all of the steps toward getting your marriage license. If you live in a different part of New York State, consult your local county clerk's office for info.
