1. Wyoming/Montana/Colorado-all similar with plains in the east and mountains in the west....but spectacular diversity.
2. Oregon/Washington/Cali-coasts and mountains.
3. Utah/Idaho/Arizona-all have some very unique and beautiful country.

My thoughts exactly, but I would also be willing to throw the western regions of South Dakota into that mix.
I love Upper Michigan, though I consider it more of an extension of northern Wisconsin than part of Michigan-proper, or maybe even its own thing I guess. I think the Upper Midwest sister states of MN, WI and MI are the most underrated for scenery in the country, along with areas of the Appalachians and the western portions of some Plains States (Black Hills & Badlands/Dakotas, Sand Hills in Nebraska, etc.). Overall you have to go with Alaska, no? Or maybe Hawaii. Because of the size and diversity, I would probably go with CA for best beyond the outliers, though enormous swaths of CA are ugly desert and flat Kansas-like farmland.
Yep...no other state has the variety of scenery that CA does.
Hah. Last time I checked CA didnt have a city with huge skyscrapers. NYS takes the cake on this- it has the most variety- beaches, rural farms, big city, mountains, lakes. Other states have way more variety than CA.
Don't get me wrong, I lived in SoCal for 20 years and love the beaches.
But New Jersey and Long Island have better beaches. The sand is whiter, and the water warmer.
If you want to talk Beach Towns, California can't be beat.
Right again... Esp LI. Most beautiful beaches in the entire country.
I think I might love you.
