Where I come from we push cows over, and fantasize about what indoor plumbing might be like! We also wonder what it's like to be from the big cities where their Walmart's sell groceries.
You do realize, of course, that "keeping oneself busy" is a highly individual thing. If you like being a stone's throw from art galleries, live theater, fine dining, cutting edge fashion, and extensive night life, you'll never be happy in a small town. At best, you'll be able to drive to the nearest big city every so often for those things. And if you consider SF and LA as feeling "small" it sounds you're the type cut out for London or NYC. And there's nothing wrong with that.
But everyone isn't like that. In small towns, single life can revolve around church-sponsored activities, engagement in civic or political affairs, lots of outdoor activities with similar minded folk -- mountain biking, hiking, rock-climbing, ice-fishing, kayaking, beach going, hunting, depending on the area. And of course there are always a small number of local amenities. There are people who love the idea that you don't have to be in a big city bar to be someplace "where everybody knows your name." They just appreciate a low-key, relaxed way of living.
That said, most single people I know do like bigger cities -- or their more urbanized suburbs --at least for a while before leaving for suburban or small town life if they start families.
Well I am very introverted and my mind keeps me busy; I like reading, programming, working on computers and playing video games. Additionally I like playing Dungeons and Dragons or other tabletop RPGs. I figure I can live just about anywhere and survive well enough. I came from a smallish (30k pop.) town and this is how I kept busy most of my days.
I come from a small town by many big city folk standards: Schenectady, NY.
Growing up we would play basketball, ride bikes around the blocks (only during the day), take day trips to NYC, hang out on the porch with other friends/family, or have cookouts if it was a nice summer/fall day.
Well, I own a restaurant, so that's where I am 7 days a week. I do enjoy cycling, astronomy, cooking outside, watching movies/tv, board games, etc... I've never really been a bar guy, but a lot of people hang out at bars... probably most of the same stuff people do in the city? We will occasionally drive to Kansas City to do various things. I technically live in the country, closest town is about 1200 people, and 30 minutes to a city of 80,000. 1 hour to KC. I like where I live, but sometimes miss living in the city. I've always worked a lot, in the last 5 years I've probably averaged 55-60 hours a week, sadly I don't have a lot to show for it...
I just came back from London and it makes LA and SF (where I spend most of my time) seem small
As a single person how do you keep yourself busy if you live in a small town or smaller city?
Just how many different options of things to do, and places to do them do you feel you need to "keep busy?"
