The East Bay cities of Oakland and Richmond have the highest crime rates in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Yeah, but they have nice parts too. It would probably make more sense to include neighborhoods rather than whole cities. SF has some of the worst neighborhoods in the Bay Area, but overall the city's crime rate is lower than Oakland or Richmond.

Yes, I know. As a lifelong Oaklander who loves it there more than anywhere else, I am well aware that both Oakland and Richmond have nice areas.

Oakland in particular, has neighborhoods that easily compete with the best in SF as far as desirability as far as Im concerned, I mean, Rockridge, for heavenssake is quite sophisticated and I would personally rate the best neighborhood in the whole state of California. I think that highly of it.

But as far as crime, the flatland of my hometown is ground zero for the Bay Area. There's no dancing around that.

My parents wont leave though. I've tried to buy them homes in the hills and even in Orinda, but they were so bored out of their minds that they wound up moving back to the hood. I cant blame them quite frankly.

Lately I've been thinking of moving back to Oakland too. Maybe a penthouse loft or something. Not sure, still thinking.

Yeah, I remember that you're from Oakland, I was just thinking for the thread, for those who don't know the Bay Area, it would be good to list neighborhoods....You're right when you say Oakland and Richmond overall are the epicenters of crime in the Bay Area. there's no denying that....but I wouldn't put SF too far behind them. I've noticed that the worst areas in the Bay Area sort of make a triangle along the bay for the most part: parts of Oakland, San Francisco and Richmond all have at least around 250 murders a year, combined in an area of I dunno...20 x 20 miles? And of course a huge chunk of that space is taken up by water.

I agree Oakland has some very desirable areas though. The views you can get from the hills are amazing to say the least. I have to get over to Oakland more though...for living in SF all my life, I really haven't explored the east bay all that much.

In Alexandria City I feel that Parker Gray (north part of Old Town) may be more of a crime area than Arlandria. It seems that more violent crime occurs there, and the relatively few homicides within the city are concentrated in Parker Gray. Most of the city's public housing is concentrated in Parker Gray. Arlandria is no picnic but I feel safer there than in Parker Gray.

The southeast part i do belive however, the south valley isnt in the city limits.. the parts of of the west side that have crime are the west gate area, or the heights in the west gate new development in the area.. but lots of low income housing causes problems thats why i live on the northwest part of town
