Its the same or improved from 2000. More people lived here in 2000 then now but urban renewal has picked up, vibrancy in neighbourhoods has gone up, revialization of many buildings has gone up, overall our city has become more "tourist friendly". Plus we are starting to see a surplus of people living in the city and its might result in st.louis gaining people in the 2020 census
I think this is going on by and large throughout the Midwest and Northeast. Also, VERY little suburban growth in relation to urban growth (including inner-ring suburbs).
Most likely improved. Most people who live in my town say that it used to have more crime and impoverished folk just 15 years ago.
As for my hometown of Beaverton, OR, despite the many new housing developments, nothing seems too different from when I lived there in the 90s.
My hometown, where I am currently living, has improved and continues to do so. New Tiffany's, Neiman Marcus, other higher end stores, restaurants, housing developments, new library, etc.. since 2000. Not that I'm a huge fan of all this high end stuff but it helps our tax base and the over economic health of the city.
And my favorite improvement is being built right now, a CHICK-FIL-A! From the looks of it, will probably open in a few months.
Birmingham? Improved, mostly. Although the city took a big hit in 2007 and 2008. It was the country's third largest banking center and two of the four superregionals were taken over.
