Oh good grief. Yeah, and as Rance said, in comparison to Alaska, every state is in the South. I never said that I only consider the East Coast the only part of country. It's just that this ridiculous antiquated North/South divide is not applied in much of the rest of the country. After all, does anyone consider a place in the West like Utah North or South? No. Again, looking at the national map, by the very definition of the word, Virginia is Mid-Atlantic.
Look, I don't care one way or the other whether Virginia is in the North or South. I don't see myself growing up in Northern Virginia as a Southerner but if people call me one, I don't care. I won't fight tooth and nail to insist I'm not. I don't take issue with you calling Virginia the South or Virginians Southerners. I take issue with the fact that you refuse to give credence to anyone saying anything otherwise and take great offense when someone disagrees with you. You just outrightly reject it. I don't take issue with what you say, just how you say it.
Sorry for the little sideshow here folks. Vasinger and I have clashed in the Virginia forum on this same issue and it's just getting really tiresome.
The Mason Dixon line used to be the way people did this. But I guess because of air travel, Maryland and West Virginia are now at New York's door step.
There was also once a time when the middle-class of NYC would head out to the Poconos during the summer for a rare "family getaway to the country." It was unfathomable that the Poconos could be anything other than a woodsy tourist area for families and NYC honeymooners. Now, in the year 2007, the Poconos are officially the newest exurban bedroom community to NYC, as thousands upon thousands of Monroe and Pike County residents now head daily into Manhattan for work. Now that Scranton will be getting a commuter rail link to NYC, we'll probably become the newest bedroom community as well! When is this going to stop!
To put things into perspective for you, Vasinger, try to think about what Loudoun County must have been like in 1950 vs. what it is today. It probably went from being a semi-rural area where DC/Alexandria/Arlington equestrians would hang out on weekends to becoming full of tract housing, strip malls, congested roadways, etc. The same is happening to the Poconos, and I'm worried that Scranton will become its next victim as the sprawl continues on up I-380! Places that were once "God's country" are becoming more and more accessible as methods of transportation continue to evolve. Who ever would have thought that people could live in Scranton, PA and work daily in Manhattan?! Similarly, who ever would have thought that people could live in Martinsburg, WV and commute daily to DC? When will this all end?!
I do not understand this argument. Everyone has a different interpretation of this and I don't see why it matters.
To me, Mid-Atlantic is West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.
South is Kentucky, Tenn, Ark, Alabama, Miss., Fla, GA, North and South Carolina.
Texas, Arizona, New Mexico and Nevada are the Southwest to me.
California, Washington, and Oregon are the west, along with Alaska. Hawaii is also the west I guess.
Midwest is Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, North and South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, and anything else I'm forgetting.
That's MY interpretation. Who cares if someone else thinks that Virginia is the south? It's only a classification for crying out loud.

It's the "Smug Cloud" from South Park! Maybe it's just the cigarette exhaust from all of Scranton's smokers who have fled to these areas due to the new smoking ban? Maybe it's the methane produced when a bunch of cows get together and eat one too many chalupas? Maybe it's my ego again? The Bible-Belt?

If that's cow farts, we're in deep doodoo and someone needs to call Al Gore and tell him the cause for Global Warming has been firmly established!
It does seem to fit a lot of the Bible belt...and folks in Springfield, Missouri take pride in claiming to be the buckle...so maybe so!
In regards to the map depicting the 'south', i beleive that is a very accurate description of the southern region with one exception-everything west of the Mississippi River is considered 'west'! (which would include Missouri-lol)
Im sorry, but anywhere south of Orlando, FL is not Southern. It may be in the South, but its not the South in my book.
i take it you've never been to polk county & everything east of tampa in hillsborough county? trust me, you'll see what i mean. and i'm not just saying this as a biased account cos i'm from there...
