I found an article. 67,000 people left California in 2006. That is less than 1% of the state's population interestingly enough.
California population nears 38 million, LA tops 4 million (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2007/05/01/state/n151653D18.DTL - broken link)
What about all the people moving TO CaliforniA? I am from Northern CA, and am still living/working here now and almost everyone in my office is from another state.
But back to the subject, there's a lot of folks headed to Colorado also. Or more importantly, what I've heard a lot is, they are moving to where ever their spouse is from, or somewhere they have family. People who want out of CA seem to not pick some random place to go (well, some do I guess) but people I know that are gone went to whatever small Midwest or Southern town their spouses were from. Just an observation. I too, may do the same. CA is too crowded now, my husband is from the Midwest and the standard of living is much higher there than here for a middle class family.
Las Vegas is by far number one, with Phoenix being a distant second. Portland, Denver, and Seattle would come after. The Southern states are also very attractive destinations for emigrating Californians, especially amongst African-Americans.

That's very true. I know of a dozen or so families from La Jolla who all moved to Cookeville, Tennessee. One family moved because of a job opportunity and talked their friends in La Jolla to move, too, when they were able to.
Every year Nashville's alternative paper has a contest to complete the phrase "You're so Nashville if..." A couple of years ago the winner was "...if you're actually from California."
Home Sales in California are through the roof. I doubt many people are leaving now as home prices are the #1 reason for relocation out of state.
Single Family Home Sales over last year September 2008
Riverside-San Bernardino +258%
Monterey County +246%
High Desert +244%
Sacramento +186%
San Diego +86%
Los Angeles +82%
Orange County +78%
San Francisco Bay +60%

Thats because there are tracks full of empty houses going for half what they did. But my little house here in OK worth about 30k, would still be150 k or so in cali. And no big yard.
The biggest reason from what I'm told and why I left was the way its gone downhill... between the gangs and the crowding and the general din of spanish....
And many of those who are leaving are long time residents who have had it and are still moving.
There are still plenty of people who can't afford even the cheapest forclosed house in cali and are leaving for somewhere they can
