I say Mississippi, for the lack of major cities. Not very deep, but driving through seemed pretty rural. Thats a good thing imo.

Arkansas is rural, but so is West Virginia, and those two are not as "southern" as Mississippi and others (Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, the Carolinas)

I find Arkansas to be plenty southern, along with Tennessee and the Carolinas.

Either way, it's still a southern state and is the most rural.
