Just like in the Great Depression, there were some parts of the country that did better than others. The South and the Midwest suffered terribly during that period of time, while the Far West came through it considerably better.

This time around, comparatively speaking, I think the South will probably do reasonably well, what with a diversified economy, relatively low taxes and real estate prices, a large energy sector, a strong regional banking system, and relative (I mean relative) stability in employment and growth.

Your opinions? Assuming we don't suffer through wholesale societal collapse, of course.

it will be a nation-wide phenomenon. the best place for you to be will be at home. Luckily, I have some interesting survival items so i am sure i am prepared for anything short of an alien invasion. the proverbial "poop" will hit the fan. millions will be kicked out of their houses...it's going to get ugly. The so-called President is going to address the nation tonight, it should be interesting. i'm sure he's just going to try to drum up support for his B.S. "bail out" plan that bails out the richest of the rich and forces you and me to pay for their debt and their multi-million dollar buy outs.

Probably out in a rural area in a house you already own with farm animals and a large vegetable garden. Whatever will make you more self-sufficient.

No need to let that get around.

I would say in a small-to-medium sized city [50-80K], situated in a rural county with a strong agricultural tradition.

Living in a well-built home that doesn't need much upkeep, in a tight-knit community, with neighbors that you know and trust.

Lots of small businesses that are privately owned, and that don't rely too heavily on interstate transportation networks.

Yep. Places I wouldn't want to be?

LA. That place is a tinderbox.

The urban northeast.

The Rust Belt.

Costa Rica, holding a Mojito with a cold washrag on my forehead...thinking how impressive my portfolio used to be.

wouldn't that suck if for some reason a "financial emergency" was declared and the Presedential election was postponed? Argh...we'd have ole Dubya in office for longer than he should be.
