A California appeals court ruling clamping down on homeschooling by parents without teaching credentials sent shock waves across the state this week, leaving an estimated 166,000 children as possible truants and their parents at risk of prosecution.
No!? Parents without credentials teaching something to children?
Hmmmm, let me check with my mom to see if her credentials are in order.....I may have to charge her with parenting without a license as per California state law. The audacity!
A California appeals court has ruled that homeschooling of children is illegal unless their parents have teaching credentials from the state.
"California is now on the path to being the only state to deny the vast majority of homeschooling parents their fundamental right to teach their own children at home," said Michael Smith, president of the Home School Legal Defense Association.
The court overturned a lower court's finding that homeschooling did not constitute a violation of child welfare laws.
Banning homeschooling wouldn't fly around most the country, probably especially in states with a lot of children who have been homeschooled for religious reasons. They could argue religious rights. Most of America probably wouldn't go for that.
My younger sister has been home schooling her kids for years and they are scoring far better now that they are out of public schools. The people in CA should be in an uproar over this ruling.
California used to set trends. I don't think they do anymore. Just look at the out-migration going on there. People are leaving it in droves. Probably because of nonsense like this.
Good riddance, California.
By the way, the vast majority of home-schooled kids I've known, are much smarter, and get better scholarships to college than their public-school counterparts, on average.
