Lots of places make good fried chicken. It's not a southern thing. You can find it almost anywhere, but I honestly wouldn't know where to tell you to go for fast-food chains.
If you pass through Wisconsin, try the Broasted chicken instead. It's very nice, but some places make it too salty. Another Wisconsin specialty is Frozen Custard---the Dairy Queen equivalent raised to a high culinary art.
There used to be a place in St. Louis, a few blocks down the street from the arena, where visiting NHL players used to go for fried chicken, a very cheap little hole in the wall. But last time I was thre, it was taken over by new management and was no good anymore.
Korean fried chicken!!! A couple of places in Koreatown: Baden Baden, Bon Bon, and BBQ (Best of the Best Quality). These places have a couple of varieties, some with glazes, chili pepper sauces and kimchi slaw. There are a couple of these Korean beer/chicken places in Fort Lee and Palisades Park, NJ also.
There's a Japanese/Jewish restaurant in Manhattan that has amazing fried chicken, very lightly battered and fried (not overy crusty or oily), and served with a kickin' wasabi sauce.
