If all of the Big 3 domestic automakers go under it is going to have a serious impact on the economy in most areas of the country. I suspect that even if just GM goes under that too will have an enormous impact in several areas.

Which areas will be hardest hit by plant closures? And which areas of the country have suppliers that will be directly impacted by this fiasco? I do know that Buffalo, NY and the Youngstown area of Ohio will be in trouble.

Here's a good article from today's Boston Globe about how Massachusetts would not really be harmed directly if the domestic automakers failed.

You're right about Youngstown/Warren, if something happens NE Ohio and a lot of Western Pa will be affected.

It's a big impact all over the Midwest primarily I would think. St. Louisans are feeling the affect here since Fenton, a St. Louis suburb, is home to one of Chrysler's main manufacturing plants outside of Detroit. I doubt however that states in the South are feeling as much of an impact...especially in Kentucky, since Toyota's U.S. headquarters are located in Lexington. Northern Ohio I think is feeling a big impact because of Detroit, Toledo, Cleveland, and Akron's affiliation with cars.

We used to have three plants here, two GM and one Ford.

The oldest GM plant at Lakewood closed several years ago. This year alone we lost the Ford plant in Hapeville, and our remaining GM plant in Doraville just closed this Fall. We came to this party a little early in Atlanta.
