In my area of Brooklyn (5 minutes from Lower Manhattan), a typical 2 bedroom apartment costs between $2800 and $4000 and the price of a 2 bedroom for purchase would be $700,000-$900,000. Believe it or not, some 2 bedrooms around here sell for well over $1,000,000 if they are particularly spacious or are on a particularly beautiful block.
Around here out in the boonies a 2BR apartment can be around $400-$500/month furnished in a nice area. A house could be probably around $75,000-$125,000
St. Louis, just browsing Craigslist, it looks like you could a decent 2BR in Soulard for $700/month. Or about $750/month in Maryland Heights. Downtown 2BRs can sometimes be had for $800 a month or so. Around $750 in Maplewood or St. Louis Hills. And a decent 3BR around the city can probably be had for $150k.

I would LOVE to live around this. How's the job market (lol )?
The job market is tough. There are jobs but they are scarce. A lot of the work is seasonal. During the wheat harvest a lot of folks come in from other areas to work the harvest. There is a truck body plant nearby. Most of the employment is normal small town jobs such as service positions. Several folks who work at the prison and Border patrol live here in Conrad, the prison and the B.P. are always hiring. The B.P. is better but the training is rigorous. The prison is lousy work and it pays bad, they have a high turnover rate.

In the Pittsburgh area you can get a decent to very nice 2BR apt. for $500-$750. $750 would get you a place with a pool, gym, and balcony. Starter homes all over for $50,000 up. Real estate taxes in this county are the highest rate in the state and the state is about 9th highest in the nation.
