any thoughts on this move. I have 2 options right now. either chattanooga, TN or houston, TX. I personally prefer chattanooga, TN even though I know that there aren't many jobs there. houston has lot of fortune 500 companies.
BTW I have a job offer from both the places and I need to decide soon which one I want to accept.

Do you prefer a big city or a small one? Do you want to stay there long-term, or temporary (under 2 years or so)? Where's your family and does that matter (geographically)?

i have lived in MI for last 10 years and I would not mind a small city. not very small though. i will live in an apt anyways before i decide to buy a house. i have a wife and 3 year old son and school and safe neighbourhood is very important to us. at the same time outdoor activities are imp too especially on the weekend.
i would be probably be living there for the next 3-4 years. ofcourse depends on the job situation.

chattanooga, TN job offer is better by 15% in terms of base salary compared with houston, TX. TN job is offering more vacation, more relocation money, but the only concern is that the job market in TN. my wife is in IT and we want to make sure that she finds a job in the new place before we move.

Wow. If you're from MI, moving to either of those places will be a huge culture shock. Both are VERY southern, especially Chattanooga. Compared to Michigan, both have booming job markets, so I'm sure your wife won't have much trouble finding a job. Of those two choices, I would have to suggest Tennessee, if only because Houston is in a hurricane-prone area and suffers stifling heat and humidity for a good part of the year. Keep in mind that these are probably the LAST places I would ever consider moving to. You couldn't pay me enough to move to that part of the country, but, to each his own.

every city in the U.S. is prone to natural disasters. i would not let that keep the OP from choosing a place to live. as for it being stifiling hot and humid for a good part of the year....not true. the summers can be rough but fall, winter, and spring are quite nice.

And Michigan right now is so much better? I can tell you haven't been to Houston by your comment on it being VERY Southern. It isn't. Obviously there will be some Southern qualities, but Houston isn't like Richmond, Birmingham, or something. The last hurricane (before Ike), to hit Houston was Alicia in 1983 (of course, we did have TS Allison in 2001, but that was rarity). And Houston suffers "stifling heat and humidity" for as long as Michigan suffers those blizzards.

And culture shock to the OP? Hardly in Houston. There are a ton of people in Michigan moving down here. Many work on the E and SE sides near the factories.

According to weather.com, the avg. high for Houston is above 80 degrees from May-October (April is 79 degrees). That's 6-7 months of summer. While it may be normal to Houston natives, to a Michigander that's hot.
