I can't seem to edit my first post, otherwise I would delete the picture.

No biggie. It's just that when I did this after some of my photo tours from PA to show people what sorts of listings were available a former moderator on here came down on me pretty harsh, giving me a 24-hour ultimatum to send him all of the links so he could remove them (I would have assumed I would have been banned if I didn't comply). Apparently MLS photos are a HUGE no-no on this forum for some reason.

$300,000 here doesn't buy a detached home.

You can get a 2 bedroom and 2 bath condo with around 1,000-1,500 square feet in a nice and safe area though. Possibly with an attached garage.

I would love to live in CA, but the teacher salaries are much lower there considering what we make in NYC and the cost of living in CA being slightly higher.

As Rachael84 said 300k won't get you anything out here on Long Island. You could get a condo but those are big NO-NO's for Long Island. The resale value would suck.

Houses don't start getting "ok" till you get to 500k+. Which I don't understand because its really not a fun place to live like SoCal.

Eh, not exactly, my fiance have been looking at houses around 300k and they're not in real terrible condition. They need updating and they're tiny, but they're ok.

I meant more by like a Southerner's standards. I have a question if you wanted to buy a 300k house, how much would a down payment have to be?

We have very little for a downpayment since we're paying for a wedding. There's this new kind of loan called an FHA loan through the government. You would only need to put down 3%.
