but seriously i can usually tell a city/metro area person by their dress/appearance in comparison to smaller towns or rural areas (anywhere in the country). generally city people are thinner more tightly fitted clothes, men with scarves ( i mean the silky designer kind ), men with big gold chains, every other woman in uggs. wear darker colors. just my observation...
i gotta say when i visit my parents in CT, i feel thin. but whenever i'm back in the city, i feel relatively less thin
no idea about ethnic appearance

In California, you can sometimes tell someone is from another state based on appearance. They are usually less up to date on trends and/or more conservative in their dress. If they are from NYC, they might have a more sophisticated style of dress. When I've been to other states, people always know I am Californian before I open my mouth, and I take it as a compliment, however they intend it.
Since I've been to Austin many times, I might be able to spot an Austinite, as they tend to be kind of hippy folky looking. Of course, the hippy look is loved in the Northwest too, but they tend to cover up more (cooler weather) & are less trendy. This is all generalizing, but I think that's what this topic is about. I don't usually guess where people are from, but when I find out I think "aha!", as it usually makes sense with their appearance.
Oh yeah, everyone is...that's why most of my friends, and my entire family are thin
I remember visting the Northeast and that was one of the first things I noticed. The females are usually much thinner than they are in most Midwest cities. Wasn't really checking the dudes out but I'm sure the same could be said for them, as well.
If you follow stereotypes and assumptions, you can guess where people are from based on how they look...but you will be wrong 90% of the time. There is absolutely no way to know anything about a person based on how he looks...other than specific physical characteristics.
You'll find a lot of people in shape in the NYC area. We walk a lot, that's mainly why.
Exactly, I've often wondered if I lived in a walkable city how much time I could spend concentrating on doing other things rather than in the gym. (which sucks)
As a New Yorker, I know that you can often spot out-of-staters in Florida...by their lack of suntan!
Right...because there is no sun in other parts of the world. That's ridiculous.
