I love your pug. Great pics. I also have a pug. I have lived in NY, FL, NC, and TN. I am very partial to TN. Eastern TN. It is green and beautiful. The cost of living is low, crime isn't bad in many of the eastern areas, and there is no state income tax.
I would go to the TN forum and look into the tri-cities area. That is an area very close to the mountains for scenery and hiking and there are also lots of lakes. If you like the area you can live here very modestly.
Good luck to you in your search. Maybe you should pack yourself and your pug in a motorhome and find your spot.
Love the pug. OK it can get hot here in the South, but it doesn't get that cold. You might be surprised to learn that some of our inner cities are pretty much like small towns with a lot of people interested in nature and the arts. For instance in my part of East Dallas, Lakewood, we have many writers, professors (SMU is a couple of miles away along with many other educational institutions), artists, small business owners, and 'characters'. We also have one of the largest inner-city lakes in the nation, White Rock. Similar neighborhood across town in North Oak Cliff. In Central Houston, you'd probably like The Heights or Montrose. Atlanta, Virginia-Highlands, etc.
Lakewooder, dumb question , but everything you list is in Texas, right? This is appealing as it's a straight shot south from where I am. Same time zone AND I went to Texas once, went to a chili-cook off and decided it was heaven.
Sweetclimber, you pack a powerful punch in one sentence. so many good ideas. I bet you are an excellent climber. Swift, efficient and strong.
Mousetrap, thanks for the Santa Cruz concern. Indeed being alone and with a high-maintenence pug, safety is a top concern.
Eightiesfan. SWEET! A list? Too awesome. Yes please.
Wow. Younglisa I am honored. I found your thread today and was too overwhelmed to comment...I mean, what your doing in Tennesse is nothing short of a life lesson for all of us. Go get your dream, take it by the horns and twist. You are my hero.
An RV huh? This may fall into the "just so crazy it might work" category. I mean, it isn't crazy, I just hadn't thought of it. So what if I'd be alone, right? I have a pug, I have friends in other cities...I could do a tasting sampler!! I like this because so many of these suggestions you're all giving me are so intriguing. I must see them all!
I'm only half-way through your thread...it's 7 degrees below zero here, I am curled up with Walter on the couch catching up. When I saw you had a pug, I couldn't believe it. She sure does well with those cows! My guy would be under then fence and over the ridge with them!

Watchoverme, you remind me I have family near Northampton. I've been there once, a long time ago. I should revisit.
Synopsis, any particular towns in that region you like?
Minnehahapolitan - I hope you're keeping warm! I have good things about Burlington. Good arts scene there I think?
Newarkbomb, Rhode Island? I think I had a family vacation on Block Island a million years ago...and I think I vaguely remember R.I and positively so. Must revisit.
Houstoner, I love that two of my good options, provincetown and Port Townsend are at worlds end from each other! They are both cities (towns?) I'm interested in seeing.
Christina, Asheville certainly keeps coming up. A heavy contender.
Thanks everybody and keep 'em coming! Wally and I are up for an adventure!

It's so funny, because honestly Asheville NC came to me as well. That must tell you its a great place. I would also put a vote in for Portsmouth NH. Great very clean, quaint, charming, low crime city close to the Atlantic Ocean.
For what money you have to spend it would be a serious keeper if you saw it. One of the truly nicest places to live in America. Very charming downtown. Fifteen hundred to two grand would be plenty for a place. Do youself a favor and look into it. I've only been there about five times but I've been all over and it is truly a gem. I would put it first, then Asheville.

Thanks, as a dog lover and owner (I have a 7 yr old German Pointer) I know how important it is to find a place suitable for the cute puppy as well as yourself. Good luck!
