What would it take for you to pack up and move to another country? In light of the economic fears, I've been thinking about this. Not in a serious way, but its been in the back of my head. What if we move towards socialism? What would it take for you to throw in the towel and leave the states?
I live near the Mexican border, and that is not an accident. If thins really melt down bad, I think life in Mexico would be better than in the US, but you'd have to go with enough to live on (which is cheap), because it would be very hard to make a living there unless you had a subsistence or marketbale talent. The reason I say that is because Mexico is today getting along fine with a realtively low demand for energy and technology, most foods are grown not too far from the consumers, most rural people already live on the local product, most people have no car and don't need one, most places have a climate in which you can literally live outdoors the year round if you had to. People are already living in an economic state compareable to what American would call apocalyptic, and they are making a go of it.
I have no evidence of this, but I suspect that if you went down there with 20 or 30K, you could probably capitalize a skilled Mexican in a small business, and make enough for you both to live on. And, contrary to popular belief, Mexicans back away from the border and the tourist traps are very nice, honest, hospitable people.
The only place I would ever move outside the US would be Europe, but with the weakness of the dollar (I think $0.62 to a Euro) you wouldn't be that much better off there. Plus, if the American Economy collapses, then the World would be in a financial crisis.
I have actually discussed it with my husband. I don't think a lot of people realize who they are dealing with when they give their support to Obama. I believe in freedom and I am not sure he knows what that is. He wants women to be free to kill, but he does not want a person to be able to defend their homes. I am not for a lot of controls except prison for uncivilized people who commit crimes. A persons home should be his castle and he should be free to defend it against intruders without fear of becoming a criminal in the eyes of the law even if a gun is required to do so.
What he was saying on TV this morning and the way he was saying it brought fear to my heart. It was global this and global that. Giving to charity is fine, but we do not need to all be equaled in monetary ways unless we do it for ourselves. Charity should be something you choose to do, not something the government makes you do. The man seems unAmerican to me. The thing that is most fearful is that he seems to really believe what he is saying and thinks he is right. We need to stay a sovereign nation if we are to remain a free country.

Tell us what he said that makes you think that. Do you think the Bush/McCain republicans have not been testing thw waters to see how much freedom they can take away without a revolution breaking out?

This kind of thinking is an example of why our nation of late is having difficulty keeping alliances and friendships with other nations. Lots of places in the world have free, democratic governments. In fact, I do believe a recent study ( recently heard on NPR) showed that Canadian citizens have more "freedom" than we do. To me an unamerican attitude is to feel superior to other people. I respect other goverments and their people.
Obama did not put us in this terrible position. That goes to Bush-McCain who scare the hell out of me. Hopefully when elected, Obama/Biden can begin the long process to help get us all out of the mess we are in.
^ I agree. I actually had to read that post twice it was so warped from the reality of the world. Someday these people are going to get a very rude wakeup call, and unfortunately the rest of us who were drug that way as well. I don't think we're going to make a comeback from that either. I just hope we can hold out through my lifetime.
I think the world is holding its breath right now waiting for this election.
It's bad enough as is. I was close to moving to Costa Rica but chose the deep south instead. the people of today's society are degenerates and it only seems to be getting worse. and it's the medias fault plus the government structure. there's nothing you or i can do but either sit on the sideline and watch or abandon ship.
why wait? it's already a crappy country hypnotized by the television into thinking it's greater than it is. and given bush's speach the other night and how many times he used pompous BS "American Pride" rhetoric just goes to show you that we are a nation that lives for the ego and it goes to show you how far our ideals have fallen. Americans don't stand for anything anymore. They used to 30-40 years ago. What happened? hmmm...

Well, duh. Of course they're going to tell you that Canada's nanny state gives its citizens more "freedom" than the US. NPR is hardly an unbiased source of information. Kind of like believing everything Radio Moscow had to say about the glories of the Soviet Union.
