No offense to Speedy, I just came back from AZ, and was sorely disappointed in Phoenix. This is the 3rd/4th? time I'd been there, and each time it's just depressing. The landscape is brown, no grass, the houses are brown, the stores are brown, the sidewalks are brown, brown, brown, brown. Where we drove around was dirty and arid and poverty stricken. I did not go to the wealthy suburbs so I can't comment on those.
No offense taken, you're entitled to your opinion even if it varies from mine. Phoenix really is a "love it or hate it" sort of place, there isn't a whole lot of middle ground. Those who love it here would almost NEVER think of being anywhere else but those who hate it here, hate it with a passion. I for one am very happy living here but I won't deny there are things in the Valley that definetly need improvement.
What areas did you drive through? Sometime come up to Scottsdale or Paradise Valley and I bet you'll be impressed (we actually have green up here).

I've heard Phoenix isn't that great anyway, and Portland,I'd rather have Albuquerque on than Portland.
So you've never been to Phoenix, you're just making a half-ass assumption based on what you hear on this forum?
And Portland, I mean that's on of the best cities in the US. Why didn't you take Toledo off? I mean it's not even close to being 1/2 the city Portland (or for that matter any other city in that poll is)!
I've never thought of Portland as much of a great city, but if any of you when you post would like to make a list of your favorite cities go ahead.Im suprised San Francisco is more popular than NYC and The Chi

Portland is not one of the best cities in the US, maybe in oregon. Portland is a small city, with not near as much to do or high class city type as chicago or New York, or Pittsburgh, San fran, Philly, Detroit, Boston..etc. it is yet to become a good city, maybe, but for right now it is not much, except a city in comparison to cincy, and Sacremento.

I find it odd that you include Pittsburgh and Detroit on par with those other tier 1 and 2 cities, but not Portland? Pittsburgh is not the first city that comes to mind when people think of high class city. Not to mention Detroit.......

We drove 1100 miles over the week - Phoenix to Sedona, Sedona up to Flagstaff, over to Winslow, New Mexico, one day to Williams up to the Grand Canyon. Back down to Phoenix from Sedona. I've been to Scottsdale in the past (along with Cave Creek which I thought was a pretty cool "arizona-y wild west" type town) and thought it was nice (although we drove to the border of Scottsdale when we were in Phoenix, and uh.... - scary! ) - your typical wealthy suburb.
It was strange though - driving to Scottsdale from Sedona up 89A, there was one part where I swore I was in the pinelands of NJ - the vegetation and landscape was almost identical!!!
