Thanks. Although I prefer warmer weather, my kids absolutely love snow, and I am seeing job possibilities in Upstate New York. Thanks for those great links, ckhthankgod! The high taxes are a little scary. Hopefully the COL would balance that out.

I agree with the posts about east Tennessee. I've lived in Dayton (near Chattanooga) and Maryville (just outside of Knoxville) and I loved it. Where we live now is Olive Branch, Mississippi and it is also very affordable in this area (Desoto County, just south of Memphis) Tupelo Mississippi is also a great, family friendly, and affordable place.

I agree with you about Maryville. The only reason I didn't include it is because I'm not sure how much of a house can be bought there for less than $150k. Otherwise it's a great town with outstanding schools and is in a beautiful location.

I agree also about Olive Branch. I used to live in Memphis, and I think just about everyone in Memphis who wanted a safe place to raise kids but couldn't afford the wealthy parts of Memphis moved to Olive Branch and other parts of DeSoto County. It's worth checking out, too.

Exactly......People just look at taxes, but don't realize you can get some quality things for an affordable price. I got my house for only 83,000 in a working class, but safe Northern suburb of Syracuse. It has 3-4 bedrooms with a back yard and of decent size(1200 sq. ft. not including the basement) in a good school district too. So, imagine what you can get around here for 150,000?
