yikes some people on here sound like they have never been outside of their home state
Are you referring to the people who think Houston somehow magically outranks Boston, Philadelphia, San Fransisco, Washington D.C. and a whole list of other U.S. cities?
That's like saying we in American should be envious of Ethiopia for having 8% economic growth in 2008.
You are getting confused by comparing apples and oranges.
People become envious of their neighbors who are on the same footing. Who for some reason, one of the neighbor comes across some $$ or some good luck; not of someone who lives on the other side of town who is downtrodden and finally got a job.

And then what of us who have been to all of these cities and think that Houston is a better city than half of them? San Francisco and Boston are my two favorite American cities, and Philly and Washington DC have the historic and national prominence, but it in no way affects what Houston is. Houston is an economic and regional powerhouse. It's a well cultured, diverse, and international city. It may not be a great place to visit (or get shot and killed) like DC or Philadelphia, but it is a great place to live.
I've been all over this nation and have quite a few stamps on the passport and very content and proud to call Houston home.

I have no problem with people who like Houston, are proud of it and want to get its name out there. I suspect I would like Houston for some of the same reasons I like Atlanta -- it seems like a pretty livable place. However, I think its laughable to try to say there are the Big Four: NYC, Chicago, LA, Houston. I'd think it was a little funny if Boston, SF or DC tried to pull this, but it would be waaaay more justifiable. Just to be clear, that's my main beef with some of the Houstoners here -- the Big Four concept. There's three and then all the rest. Houston falls in the "all the rest" category. If Houston wants to be part of a Big Three or Four, it should focus on the state of Texas. It definitely wins the Big Three there, even the Big Two, but then it runs into debatable territory.
Judging on how many Houston homers have flooded this thread with their desperate appeals for validation, I think it's safe to conclude that Houston has the biggest inferiority complex.
Artificial bounderies are the ONLY reason Houston is 4th in population. You are NOT the fourth largest metro, and that is what counts. To claim that Houston is the 4th largest city is really nothing more than a shell game, and we all know it.
You are also not the only city that has an international presence on multiple continents. You may be the only city that does however without having nonstop flights to all of them.
Houston covers more international cities than Atlanta.

You seem like a fairly reasonable person, as Houston boosters go. Let me get this straight and get this on record -- you believe that there are three categories of U.S. cities: 1) LA, NYC, Chicago, 2) Houston, 3) all the rest? Please don't come at me with the fourth largest because we're talking about cities here .. Atlanta is actually slightly more dense than Houston in terms of square miles to person, and Atlanta city proper doesn't feel like a city in many of its areas. As far as NASA, Shell, large port .. ok, I get it. Houston is important, but other cities are important too for different reasons. So do you hold the "three categories of U.S. cities" theory? If you do, you're perception is so far off base of most Americans I've spoken to from every single region of the U.S. the word "delusional" may be applicable.
Well if you want to bring in density, Houston's inner loop (98 sqm) alone has a bigger population than the whole city of ATL. I'm not speaking for every america, but I'm sure the majority of the people on this board know how important Houston is. I don't know why you keep bring up the "Big Four" thing, I never said there was a big four, but if someone thinks it than it is justifiable considering Houston is the 4th biggest city in America. If you guys think Houston is "inferior" than fine, it's ok with me. We know who we are and what we do. You think this poll really means something considering the majority of the people that voted for Houston are people from ATL and people that a grudge against people from Houston.
I just find it crazy that the two most laid-back cities are winning. Just goes to show another word is being butchered on city data, and half the people don't know what the word inferior means.
