I say L.A. because of the massive parks, horseback riding, beaches, and good weather most of the year.
And I would totally agree. Especially because of the year round weather.
For second place if you are only talking about the actual city andimmediate area - probably Chicago which is less crowded, its forest preserves, and a great waterfront for water activites in Lake Michigan. If you are talking about close by regional than NYC which has skiing, hiking, boating etc in the Catskills, Jersey shore, Long Island, Hudson Valley and Connecticut.
San Francisco seems more outdoorsy to me. Marin County is the epitome of the green grass of California (and where California cows live). Napa is not that far away and the Redwoods is in the region.
Just look at the Hermès store locator and you'll see someone hiking among the NorCal Redwoods in the San Francisco submenu.
