I lived in Atlanta my whole life until 2005. Although the name Atlanta conjers up images of Gone With the Wind and all that, reality is quite different. Nothing "country" about Atlanta...

Atlanta is much much more like a NE city than Richmond is.

Richmond is not THAT dense. Sure it does have some buildings here and there. But that does not make it Northern. You have obviously never been ton Monument Ave. You havent been to the White House of the Confederacy

You can look on the map and see that Richmond is well below the Mason Dixon line. It does not have a "Northern" flavor

The only Northern flavor are the tourists we get complaining about how slow we are , lol.

And please, Richmond is not 5 hours from NYC. It is at least 7. I know because I drive pretty fast.

Richmond is 5.5 - 6 hours from NYC IF you leave at the right time.

USATODAY.com - 10 years in a row: Charleston named best-mannered city

That's four years old, but Charleston, South Carolina did come on top for "mannered city" ten years in a row.

For historic there's

Moderator cut: link removed, linking to competitors sites is not allowed

It lists Natchez, Mississippi as the most historic Southern small-town. Other historic Southern towns they list are: Greenville, Alabama; Hot Springs, Arkansas; Rome, Georgia; Newport, Kentucky; Roanoake Rapids, North Carolina; Bennettsville, South Carolina; Columbia, Tennessee; Bastrop, Texas; and Keswick, Virginia.

Another possible source, even if I believe in taking with a grain of salt, is Wikipedia.

List of American cities by year of foundation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Going by it the oldest cities in the South among the "most from same state" list include: Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Mobile, Alabama; New Orleans, and Louisville, Kentucky.

I've heard Atlanta before but every time I've been there it just seems like it's lost alot of charm and is just another big city. Thanks and I appreciate the help!
The big Southern cities are full of transplants, however, as a new graduate, you are probably going to have to live in or very near one. I say, find a job you like first and then ask for suggestions where near that location you might want to live.

Aesthetically, Richmond's density, location along a river and I-95, close proximity to New York, location along the rain/snow line and industrial grittiness give it a rather Northern flavor than true Southern cities like Savannah, Atlanta, Charleston and New Orleans.
Have you never driven down Monument Ave? Those 'monuments' are of Confederate Generals. LOL it doesn't get any more Southern than that street.

There are a ton of NYers living in Richmond just like in Atlanta.

They are flooding into NC and VA too.

As far as what the OP is looking for, Charleston tops the list.
